SUMMARY:en Plein Air - Painting Workshop with Mary Jane Ward
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are available on our online store now! \n  \nJoin painter Mary Jane Ward for a one day workshop on plein air painting as we study the limited colors and shifting light of the late summer landscape. Working on location at the Scioto Gardens\, students will learn techniques for working quickly\, simplifying complex scenes\, mixing harmonious palettes directly from observation. \n  \nPlein air painting presents challenges\, with inherently changing light and weather conditions\, yet those very challenges can provide artists with the potential to awaken our energy\, inspiration\, and attention to the present moment. How we balance those inspirations and observations with our technical painting process is an ongoing journey of painting en plein air. \nStudents will watch a demonstration and get one on one feedback as they work alongside the instructor to practice translating their own observations of nature into the language of color\, value and shapes. This workshop is designed for painters of all experience levels looking to deepen their connection to nature while developing confidence and sensitivity in outdoor painting. \n  \nDemonstration will be in oils. Students are welcome to work in their preferred medium–drawing or painting. \n  \nSupply Lists \nStudents bring their own supplies. Use these lists as recommendations\, not requirements\, to help you make sure you have what you need. If you use different supplies\, that is fine! Please bring what you are comfortable using. There will be chairs and folding tables and a canopy for shade at the Scioto Gardens. \n  \nGeneral Supplies \nSUMMER \nWear a hat with a brim. Consider the weather\, and dress in layers. When painting outdoors\, temperatures can shift–it can be warmer or cooler than you expect. As a general rule\, it is easier to take a layer off if you are too warm than trying to concentrate on painting if you are too cold! Also consider bringing a water bottle and a snack to keep your energy up. Wear sunscreen and insect repellant. \nPlein Air Supplies for oil painting \n\ntravel easel / pochade box with tripod\nbrushes\nrags/paper towels\nsolvent in a jar with a lid\npanels (it can be nice to bring a few sizes so you can have options to work with) 5″ x 7″\, 6″ x 8″\, 8″ x 10″\, 9″ x 12″ – whatever you would like to work on in the three hours\noil colors (see list below)\n\nOil colors list (these are just suggestions\, please feel free to work with what you have) \n\nTitanium White\nCadmium Yellow Medium\nYellow Ochre\nRaw Sienna\nBurnt Sienna\nCadmium Red (or Napthol Red)\nAlizarin Crimson\nRaw Umber\nSap Green\nViridian\nUltramarine Blue\nKings Blue Deep (Michael Harding)\nPaynes Gray\nIvory Black\n\nPlein Air Supplies for drawing \n\npencils\, erasers\, charcoal\, etc.\ndrawing board\nlightweight travel easel\npaper (toned paper can be nice to cut down on glare)\nTape or clips to attach your paper to drawing board\, or keep it really simple and just bring a sketch book to hold in your lap!

A nature inspired design and instillation company specializing in habitat restoration\, natural playscapes\, native plantings and creative landscaping solutions. Recent projects include the Natural Playscape at infirmary mound in Licking County and the relocation of a 100 plus year old barn to be used as an outdoor classroom in Westlake OH. We like to find creative solutions to common landscape problems. I like to say if I can dream it I can build it. \n  \n\nJohn Watts: “Ohio’s Natural Areas and Their Restoration” \nOhio’s original natural landscape was a mosaic of ecosystems that reflected the state’s unique geology and pre-settlement habitats. Learn about the past and present state of our wetlands\, prairies\, forests\, and rivers and how conservation agencies like the Columbus Metro Parks have worked to restore them. \nA little about John: John was with the Columbus Metro Parks for 33 years where he was the Resource Manager\, coordinating and administering the Park’s Resource Management Program for 27\,500+ acres of natural area park lands in central Ohio. During his time as Resource Manager\, the Parks restored approximately 4\,500 acres of native habitats\, including wetlands\, prairies and forests\, as well as overseeing the species reintroduction program\, invasive species control\, wildlife management\, and education programs. His work included the restoration of nearly 1\,800 acres of native tall grass prairie in the former Darby Plains Prairies\, now known as the Watts Wetland. John earned his B.A. in Environmental Life Science from Otterbein College in 1986 and his M.S. from The Ohio State University in Parks and Recreation Administration in 1989 and worked for the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves from 1986-1991 conducting rare species monitoring\, habitat restoration and natural area management. \n  \n\nChris Kline: “The Best Plants to Attract Butterflies” \nThis conversation will discuss the best native plants (and even exotic annuals) to attract butterflies to the home landscape. \nA little about Christopher: Christopher Kline is a plant guy by training\, with a Forest Management degree from Northern Arizona University and a Masters in Plant Biology from Ohio University. Along the way his interest in bugs has grown\, leading to developing and directing the Butterfly Ridge Butterfly Conservation Center in Rockbridge\, Ohio\, where he and his wife have converted 21 acres of fields and forests into butterfly-friendly habitats and have exploded the butterfly population in the process.  As their butterfly population has increased by 300 percent\, they have also documented well over 1000 moth species. \n  \nMarne Titchenell “What You Didn’t Learn Watching Batman” \nJoin Marne Titchenell for an engaging look into the lives of Ohio’s bats. Where do they live\, and how do they spend their time? Learn about their unique ecology\, the threats facing their populations\, and what you can do to help protect Ohio’s bats. \nA little about Marne: Marne Titchenell serves as the Extension Wildlife Program Director at The Ohio State University\, based in the College of Food\, Agricultural\, and Environmental Sciences\, within the School of Environment and Natural Resources. Marne provides a variety of educational programs\, workshops\, conferences\, and publications centered on wildlife ecology and biology\, habitat management for wildlife\, and managing conflicts between humans and wildlife. She was fortunate to discover her passion for wildlife conservation and outreach education early in her career and now works to spark interest and love of nature in Ohioans of all ages. At home\, she gets her inspiration from her own two little nature-enthusiasts\, her daughters\, Cora and Isla. \n  \n\nLizzy Skulich: “Bee bonanza: the bees to see in Ohio” \nLizzy will discuss native bees\, how to identify them\, AND attract them to your gardens. She will have pinned specimens for folks to look at\, too! \nA little about Lizzy: “I’m a pollinator researcher at The Ohio State University\, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in wildlife science and entomology and my master’s degree in ecology and evolution. My work centers on bee and butterfly communities across Ohio\, as well as the endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee in Central Appalachia. Behind all my conservation work is a passion for outreach and making science accessible to everyone!” \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Gardening for Birds\, followed by a bird walk with Chris Tonra (Associate Professor of Avian Wildlife Ecology at OSU’s School of Environment and Natural Resources; and Chair of the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park)\n  \nEarly May is peak migration for birds returning to their breeding grounds\, and Ohio is truly a mecca for this annual phenomenon. Dr. Tonra has been studying avian ecology and conservation for the last 26 years and has been at OSU for the last twelve. Though he’s traveled extensively for his research\, much of it has focused on habitat ecology right here in Ohio. Join us to learn which plants are most beneficial for our local and migratory birds. We’ll also have some Smithsonian-certified bird-friendly coffee (can drinking coffee really help conserve birds??) and delicious breakfast pastries. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an end-of-the-season “Caterpillar Crawl” through the Scioto Gardens nursery\, looking for caterpillars of our native moths and butterflies. We’re stocked up on all sorts of keystone host plants\, ranging from goldenrods and asters to oaks and cherry trees\, so we hope to found a bounty of cool cats! \n  \nWe will have normal and UV flashlights on hand to help us on our search\, and cameras are highly recommended to document what we find. If we come across caterpillars that we can’t ID at first sight\, we may use iNaturalist (or Seek) to help us with our identifications\, and we will be posting our sightings there as well. If you’d like to see some of the caterpillars already discovered here at Scioto Gardens\, visit our iNaturalist project. \n  \nGuests will be walking our property in the dark\, on gravel\, mulch\, and grassy trails. We will meet at 8pm for brief instructions on what we’re looking for and how to find them before heading out into the nursery to explore! \n  \nWhat to bring: Bug spray\, and shoes for off-road adventures! We will largely be sticking to pathways through the nursery\, but may encounter tall plants and possibly poison ivy. Regular or UV flashlights are nice but not required. Cameras recommended! \nExtra flashlights will be available. Expert recommended flashlight: uvBeast UV Flashlight \n  \nWhen: 8:00pm – 10:00pm\, Saturday\, September 20\, 2025 \nCost to Attend: $5 per person (Ages 8+) \n  \nInstructions: \n\nAdvance registration is required\nWhen purchasing tickets\, please enter the names for each attendee\nPlease arrive 10 minutes before the event to allow time for parking and check-in. You are welcome to arrive earlier as well to enjoy the sunset before the event!
