Canaan Fir, also known as West Virginia Fir or Bracted Balsam Fir, is possibly a naturally occurring hybrid with Abies fraseri (Fraser Fir) which is more heat and drought tolerant than Abies balsamea. Canaan Fir is named after the Canaan Valley in West Virginia, where it was first identified as the southernmost variant of the species. It is a small to medium sized evergreen tree with soft, fragrant foliage and medium green to silvery in color. It was selected and bred for Christmas Tree production in Ohio because it can tolerate the typical soil conditions and climate better than the species. It does prefer moist, cool, acidic and well-drained soil conditions and can struggle in hot, dry summers with low humidity.
