‘Snow Flurry’ is a cultivated variety of our native White Heath Aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides). This selection is a dense, compact, low-growing form that becomes engulfed in white flowers in fall. This sun-loving aster thrives in average to dry, well-drained soils. It has a moderate salt tolerance, is unpalatable to deer, and unbothered by drought, poor fertility, clay, sandy, or shallow, rocky soils. It is perfectly suited to rock gardens, the front of perennial borders, along walkways or cascading over walls.
‘Snow Flurry’ was one of seven asters (out of 119 varieties) to receive the top ratings in the six-year Aster Evaluation Trial at the Chicago Botanic Garden: “The habit of White Heath Aster, Symphyotrichum ericoides ‘Snow Flurry’, set it apart from any other asters in the trial. The low, arching stems create an undulating mounded habit only 8 inches tall but nearly 4 feet wide. The mat-forming habit makes a great groundcover and is an excellent choice to cascade over walls or containers. ‘Snow Flurry’ is aptly named for the snowstorm of white flowers that blanket plants in September and October. No description of the small white flowers does justice to the actual stunning floral display. ‘Snow Flurry’ is also disease free and tolerant of dry conditions.”
