Fancy Ferns are evergreen, strongly vase-shaped ferns with eye-catching, finely dissected fronds that create a lacy texture in the landscape. They thrive in shady settings and are found happily growing on rocky slopes under mature hemlocks, but they are also easy to grow in a shady garden bed with rich, organic soil. A Fancy Fern could be grown as a specimen, or in drifts of distinctively delicate and “fancy” looking foliage. They pair well with most woodland wildflowers, looking especially fine with Bloodroot, Hepatica and Bleeding Hearts.
