‘Annabelle’ is a cultivated variety of our native Smooth Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens). This selection features massive white flower heads that resemble snowballs in summer! Blooming occurs on new wood, so pruning can be done between late fall and early spring. The plants can also be cut to the ground in winter to control the size and encourage stronger stems to hold the weight of the flowers. The sterile flowers do not attract pollinators, but they make for an excellent cut flower for arrangements. They can be pruned off at the base of the plant and hung upside down to dry to make long-lasting, attractive indoor floral décor.
‘Annabelle’ looks her best when planted in partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. The brightness of the flowers looks especially good when massed in shady situations, planted along pathways, in foundation plantings and as an accent or specimen.
