‘Grey Owl’ is a cultivated variety of our native Eastern Red Cedar. It is a dwarf form, only growing to a height of 3′ tall but with a compact, horizontally spreading growth habit that can get to be 6′ wide. It retains a beautiful silver-gray foliage, even becoming tinged with purple in the winter months. This is a female cultivar and will produce a bounty of dusky blue, berry-like cones which are a valuable snack for many birds and small mammals. It is a very tough, durable, and adaptable shrub.
Juniperus spp. are the alternate host for Cedar-Apple Rust and it is best not to plant them near Apple, Crabapple or Hawthorn trees.
