‘Sweet Thing’ is a cultivated variety of our native Sweetbay Magnolia with a dwarf form that only reaches 8’ in height with a 6′ spread. It is evergreen to semi-evergreen with a dense, compact growth habit that can be grown as a large, full shrub or a multi-stemmed small tree. The creamy white flowers bloom from the end of May into June with a lemony-sweet fragrance that shouldn’t be missed, and continue to bloom sporadically until September. Sweetbay Magnolias prefer moist, acidic soils but ‘Sweet Thing’ is quite adaptable. It is a low-maintenance plant for foundation plantings, shrub borders, hedges, and even for large containers as it maintains its good looks throughout the seasons.
