‘Degroot’s Spire’ is a cultivated variety of our native American Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis.) It was selected for its narrow, columnar form that is much taller than it is wide. The intricate, twisted foliage is a rich, dark green during the growing season that bronzes in cold weather. The growth rate is relatively slow, averaging 6″ per year, resulting in a 5-10′ tall specimen in 10 years. This cultivar is excellent for year-round screening, tall hedges, foundation plantings and makes a striking vertical accent in the garden. It is a very low-maintenance plant that maintains a tight, upright shape without any pruning.
