‘Woodwardii’ is a cultivated variety of our native American Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis.) It was selected for its dense, spreading, globular form which grows wider than it is tall. The foliage is a medium green color which bronzes in the winter months. The growth rate is relatively slow, averaging only 4-6″ per year and reaching about 5 feet tall and 8 feet wide over the first ten years. The mature size is variable, usually topping out at 8 feet tall but spreading up to 15 feet. This cultivar makes up the fantastic hedge lettering at Dawes Arboretum! It is a good choice for low-maintenance plantings, and its evergreen nature will add winter interest to the landscape.
