Porch Talk: Spring into Ephemerals

This presentation explores the fascinating world of spring ephemerals—those unique plants that emerge, bloom, and disappear within a short window in early spring. Attendees will learn what defines a spring ephemeral and why these plants play such an important role in forest and garden ecosystems.
The talk highlights both popular and lesser-known species, including Trillium, Virginia Bluebells, Wood Poppy, Dutchman’s Breeches, and Jack-in-the-Pulpit. Lesser-known varieties such as Hepatica, Rue Anemone, Toothwort, Shooting Stars, and Uvularia will also be covered, offering a broad overview of native woodland flora.
For each species, the presentation will discuss preferred growing conditions, such as soil type, moisture, light requirements, and recommended zones. Advice on companion planting will be provided, helping gardeners create harmonious and sustainable plant communities. The session will conclude with practical tips for cultivating spring ephemerals and integrating them into both natural and designed landscapes.
