Callery Pear replacements that are Blooming throughout Ohio

After seeing Callery Pear bloom throughout the state in late March and early April, it’s time for many of our native alternatives to shine! Blooming now throughout Ohio are some of the best replacement options that all have their own stunning floral displays:

• Serviceberries (Amelanchier spp.): Delicate white flowers bloom in April that will give way to delicious fruit (for humans and birds alike) in June.  We carry three species of Serviceberry currently: Allegheny, Downy, and Shadblow. Available now!
• American Red Plum (Prunus americana): Blooming a little later than Serviceberries, American Red Plums keep the momentum going with similar lovely white flowers that line the branches as the leaves begin to emerge. Available now!
• Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina): With white blooms clustered in drooping racemes, Wild Black Cherries offer some variation of bloom shape. These are a taller growing tree, growing up to 50-80 feet tall. Available now!
• Choke Cherry (Prunus virginiana): Take the same drooping inflorescences from Wild Black Cherry, and place them on a suckering smaller tree/shrub, and you have Choke Cherry! Pollinators are drawn magnetically to the abundance of flowers. Our crop of Choke Cherries should be available this fall.
• Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis): Redbuds have much smaller flowers than the others on this list, but they are no less showy. Bright rosy-pink flowers cling to the leafless branches, offering some of the earliest pollen resources for our native bees. Available now!
