| Looking to add a little color to your yard? Something that will stun each fall for years to come? Thankfully there are natives of just about every shape and size that can provide a pop of interest this time of year. Some are usual suspects, like our deciduous trees. A stunning example this fall at the nursery is our White Oaks (Quercus alba), which are turning bright scarlet. Others may be a bit of a surprise, like Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum). Though they are conifers, they lose their needles in the fall, but not before transitioning to beautiful auburn orange. It’s not just the trees though… shrubs can be just as beautiful in autumn. Larger specimens like Winged Sumac (Rhus copallinum) will form clonal colonies that erupt in saturated reds each fall. Others like Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata) present colorful foliage mixed with their red berries that persist well into winter after the leaves have fallen. Even grasses can be exquisite options for fall color. Both the straight species of Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) and the cultivar ‘Standing Ovation’ turn bright shades of orange that have great curb appeal.
