With summer halfway over, now is the time to think about installing new ferns into your gardens! Ferns make great additions to most shady landscapes, providing shelter, nesting material, erosion control, and helping to keep soil cool and nutritious. They are often deer and rabbit-tolerant as well. Ferns also take a little longer to establish than faster-growing plants, however, and need to get established before winter arrives. This makes late summer a great time to get them into the ground and ready for next spring!
