We recently had the opportunity to compare plants grown here at Scioto Gardens with another grower’s plants, and we think the differences are pretty plain to see.
While the other grower’s plants were lush above the soil with plenty of foliage, the roots below were circling the container and required teasing before they were suitable for planting. Once teased out, the planting mix that they used fell right apart.
By contrast, our plant had a little less foliage above the soil. The roots, however, had filled the pot yet also been air-pruned by the breathable containers we use. This meant that the roots required no teasing prior to planting, and were immediately ready to be put into the ground. They also retained all of the soil, meaning that they’ll be much less likely to dry out and be much quicker to establish in their new home.
What causes this difference? Two big factors are our soil mix and our containers. We use real soil, which is much denser than traditional potting mediums, and holds moisture much better both before and after being planted. We also use breathable root pouches as our containers. These pouches are made of recycled plastic and fabric, and have a permeable surface that air and water travel through. This means that the roots don’t grow right up against the containers or circle the pots, and need little to no teasing to be planted.
